AWIS Inspires Future Scientists at NextGen STEMFest 2026

May 30, 2026

On May 30, MASS AWIS participated in NextGen STEMFest at the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham, joining more than 50 exhibitors in celebrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on learning and community engagement.

Our interactive booth introduced visitors of all ages to the exciting field of biomaterials and tissue engineering through a hands-on hydrogel activity. Participants learned how naturally derived polymers can be used to create gel-like materials that mimic aspects of biological tissues. Using sodium alginate and calcium chloride solutions, attendees created their own hydrogel beads and strands while exploring concepts related to biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and biomedical engineering.

Throughout the day, children, students, parents, and educators engaged in conversations about how scientists and engineers develop innovative solutions to medical challenges. The activity provided a fun and accessible introduction to tissue engineering while encouraging curiosity about STEM careers and research.

The event brought together researchers, educators, industry professionals, and student volunteers to showcase the creativity and innovation taking place across Massachusetts. MASS AWIS was proud to support this community-centered event and to help inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

We thank the organizers of NextGen STEMFest, our volunteers, Magdalena, Christina, Shweta, Doo Eun, Assem, and Sovannarith, and everyone who stopped by our booth.

We look forward to continuing our mission of advancing STEM education, outreach, and opportunities for future generations.
