Have you ever presented to people outside of your field and found that they just don’t “get it”? Failed to inspire an audience with your research when you think the science is simply obvious? How can you get more people excited about your work? For STEM professionals, it can be overwhelming to communicate complex ideas to non-STEM and even other scientific audiences. But fear not, we have a solution!

Come join us for a lecture-style workshop where graphic designer and presentation coach Laura Foley (bio below) will share tips and tricks on how to convey scientific information in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. Covering topics such as “Pitching to investors” and “Giving an elevator pitch”, Laura will also demonstrate a series of before-and-after slide makeovers to show you the striking difference a well-made slide can make for your research presentation!

Guest Bio

As the Cheater of Death by PowerPoint, Laura Foley provides presentation coaching and design services that help people communicate their ideas and be better presenters. She specializes in helping STEM professionals to create and deliver presentations that can be understood by a wide audience.

She has worked with many STEM professionals, including The Optical Society, EMC, TE Connectivity, VMware, General Dynamics, Juniper Networks, Procter & Gamble, Nestlé and Harvard Business School, and has taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Simmons College, the Central Mass Business Expo, and the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst. Her speaking engagements include HOW Design Live, the largest conference for creative professionals in the world.

A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in printmaking and graphic design, Laura has over two decades’ experience in presentation design, marketing, and copywriting. She lives in Central Massachusetts with her husband and two sons. Laura is a Boy Scout leader and serves as a merit badge counselor and an Assistant Scoutmaster for Hubbardston Troop 22.
