About the event

Application for July 2026 - June 2027 MASS-AWIS Leadership Positions


The MASS-AWIS Board of Directors is seeking members interested in a leadership position to submit an application describing their interests and experience.  

  • Applications may be submitted to the Administrator no later than June 1, 2026 (fill out this document, and send it to the MASS-AWIS President at president@massawis.org).

  • The Board will consider all applications and collectively agree on a new leadership slate for the 12-month term (July 1 2026 -June 30, 2027). Prior volunteer experience with MASS-AWIS is considered but not required. Leadership skills acquired with other organizations may also be considered.

  • The new slate will be presented to the membership for a ratifying vote in June 2026 or no later than 20 days before the start of the new leadership term. All applicants will be contacted by a Board representative prior to the slate announcement.  


Additional information for applicants:

  • The MASS-AWIS leadership term is for the period of 1 year, beginning on July 1 2026 and continuing to June 30, 2027. 

  • All slated Leaders are considered members of the MASS-AWIS Board of Directors and must attend quarterly board meetings in addition to fulfilling the responsibilities of their position.

  • All members of the MASS-AWIS Board of Directors must be AWIS members in good standing.

  • Attendance at a Board of Directors Training in July/August is required of all slated leaders.

Chair: Treasurer

Position Overview: The Treasurer is a member of the executive board. The key role of the Treasurer is to receive all revenues, pay all expenses, maintain financial records, prepare financial reports, file tax return forms to IRS and Attorney General’s office of Massachusetts, and prepare annual budgets.


Expectations of Committee Chair:

  • Receive all chapter dues, donations, and other income; keep these monies in an authorized (and insured) financial institution; and disburse all monies to be paid by MASS AWIS.

  • Maintain financial records for MASS AWIS.

  • Pay all invoices and request for reimbursement by check, bank draft using checking account info online, or PayPal account.

  • Prepare and present a financial report to the Executive Board at quarterly board meetings.

  • Prepare a year-end financial report which shall be part of the MASS AWIS Annual Report.

  • Submit the MASS AWIS Annual Report to National AWIS which includes the financial report and summary of the chapter activity after the close of the fiscal year (June 30).

  • Submit tax forms to the IRS and Attorney General’s office of MA by Nov 15.

  • Prepare annual budgets for all Committees and provide assistance to Committee Chairs with regards to budget management.

  • Perform other duties incident to the office as required by the Constitution and Bylaws or by the Executive Board.



Chair: Events Committee

Position Overview: The co-chair is responsible for overseeing all events (~ one per month) planned by the committee members. Since there are two positions, each co-chair is typically responsible for every other event. At least one co-chair (ideally both) will be expected to attend each board meeting (quarterly) and provide updates on committee activities (past and upcoming) to the board.

Expectations of Committee Chair:

  • Overseeing planning of event, including making sure volunteers have considered all aspects of event (e.g., location, refreshments, speaker, date, advertising, post-event survey)

  • Setting up registration site

  • Overseeing communication

    • Forwarding finalized flyer to the communications committee

    • Providing extra information to communications committee as it becomes available (e.g., event topics, save the dates before events are finalized)

    •  Requesting extra advertising when necessary

    • Attendance at events when necessary

  • Planning and running quarterly committee organization meetings during which events are roughly mapped out for the next several months

  • Attending quarterly board meetings

  • Providing written (pre-meeting) and oral (at the meeting) updates to the board quarterly


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Serving as an Events Committee member for at least 1 year (could have been for another AWIS chapter)

  • Assisting in planning at least 3 events

  • Serving as a lead volunteer for at least 1 event

Other comments:

  • Time commitment: ~ 2-4 hr/month. The commitment is for one year, with encouragement to stay for two years

  • Volunteers: There are ~20 volunteers on the committee typically.

  • Is there a co-chair: yes. There are three committee chairs so, responsibilities are split between 3 people (e.g., resulting in overseeing an event every other month rather than every month) 



Chair: Outreach and Engagement Committee

Position Overview: Recruit and maintain MASS AWIS membership. Initiate and foster relationships both inside and outside our chapter to enhance network connectivity and diversity. Promote existing and generate new benefits for MASS AWIS members.

Expectations of Committee Chair:

  • Maintain or grow MASS AWIS membership numbers

  • Provide feedback to national AWIS on chapter initiatives and membership trends

  • Attend quarterly board meetings

  • Host quarterly meetings with the committee including planning meetings, writing agendas, etc

  • Partner with STEM organizations in the surrounding community and provide mutual support

  • Administer all awards and member benefits, both inside and those donated to MASS AWIS

  • Send emails to members regarding lapsed membership

  • Ensure timely responses to all membership@massawis.org email messages

  • Generate quarterly reports on membership numbers and demographics

  • Stay up to date on changes to national membership policy and changes to the national website

  • Make recommendations for info to be added to the MASS AWIS newsletter

  • Maintain the MASS AWIS volunteer database

  • Host annual volunteer appreciation night

  • Oversee sponsorship and scholarship with collaboration with the treasurer

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of excel and website administration helpful

  • Time commitment: 2 hours per week, on average, fluctuates week to week

Chair: Mentoring Committee

Position Overview: The Mentoring Committee Chair(s) are members of the board and are responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing the mentoring program, including the Mentoring Circles and mentoring-related events.


Expectations of Committee Chair:

  • Attending and leading committee meetings

  • Attending Board meetings and participating in all voting matters

  • Submitting all requested information for Board meeting agendas

  • Maintaining meeting notes and agendas

  • Planning and running mentoring events for recruitment

  • Planning and running the Mentoring Circle events (i.e. Kick-Off, Mentor Training, and the End of Year Celebration)

  • Collaborating with other committees as needed

  • Recruiting and delegating to committee members

  • Communicating with active and potential mentees and mentors

  • Matching the mentoring circles


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • New ideas and troubleshooting skills

  • Mentor or mentee experience preferred

  • Responsiveness and adaptability


Other Comments:

  • Approximate Time Commitment:

    • Board Meetings: 2 hours quarterly

    • Committee Meetings: ~1 hour biweekly

  • Increased meetings/tasks during circle matching and Kick-Off planning

Chair: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, DEI Committee

Position Overview: The overall goal of the DEI committee is to act in concert with the other committees of the MASS-AWIS chapter to keep DEI front of mind in our actions and our programming. The committee acts to ensure that under-represented groups including but not limited to LGBTQ+, POC, and neurodivergent members of our community feel welcome, included and represented in our organization. The DEI committee often works with the Events and Communication team to plan events that highlight a diverse group of speakers, partner with other groups, and create a safe space for networking. The DEI committee may also work with additional committees within the MASS-AWIS BoD including but not limited to the Scholarship and Outreach committees to expand membership to diverse populations and to the Leadership committee to include the importance of DEI in leadership within their programming.


Expectations of Committee Chair:

  • Organize and participate in monthly meetings with other members of the DEI committee to plan upcoming events and coordinate upcoming and ongoing initiatives.

  • Work closely with the Events and Communication committees to oversee and communicate planning of events, specifically in planning events related to DEI

  • Work with the webmaster of MASS-AWIS website and other committee members to support inclusive language and promote equity and inclusion in our activities

  • Attending quarterly board meetings

  • Providing written (pre-meeting) and oral (at the meeting) updates to the board quarterly


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Familiarity with and passion for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Desire to continuously learn and improve 


Time Commitment of the Committee Chair:

The DEI committee works closely with volunteers and chairs/volunteers of other committees as needed to communicate and execute the committee’s responsibilities. Overall, the time commitment varies; however, on average, between 4 and 6 hours a month are needed to fulfill the responsibilities.
