About the event

Presented By

On May 10, 2018, the NSTMF will host Geraldine Richmond at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Dr. Richmond is the recipient of the National Medal of Science in Chemistry and is the Presidential Chair in Science and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon.
A world-renowned chemist, Dr. Richmond is most famous for her landmark discoveries about the molecular characteristics of water's surface. Her breakthroughs have given researchers across the world a better understanding of how water behaves with its surroundings on a chemical level. This understanding has implications for oil spill clean-ups, environmental remediation, energy production, and so much more.
Dr. Richmond’s passion for science doesn’t stop in the laboratory; she serves as an inspiration and devoted advocate for women in STEM fields. In 1997, Richmond co-founded COACh, a grassroots organization working to increase the success of women in science and engineering fields through career-building workshops and mentoring.
Jo Handelsman, the director of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, will interview Dr. Richmond about her life and work as one of the nation's leading chemists.
This event will be webcast live on Facebook and our website. Please visit our Facebook page for more information.

In 2017 the National Science & Technology Medals Foundation (NSTMF) launched a new program, An Evening with a Laureate (AEW), in order to fulfill its mission of championing the work and lives of America’s greatest scientists and technologists and connecting these extraordinary individuals to the next generation. Each AEW event includes a formal interview with a moderator, an open question-and-answer session between the audience and the Laureate and a reception where audience members can meet the Laureate. Following the event, the attendees will be invited to submit questions for the Laureate via email. Later on, we will invite attendees to participate in a Google Hangout with the Laureate to continue the conversations started at the AEW.
The goal is to provide tangible access points to some of the smartest minds in the world, bringing these Laureates’ contributions into the public dialogue, and connecting their personal narratives with individuals all over the country. It is in every Laureate’s story that you will find commitment, struggle, perseverance, and success. The AEW program gives anyone the opportunity to learn, engage, absorb, and maybe, just maybe, be inspired by a group of truly incredible people.
