Maddalena Nano

Communications Committee Co-Chair

Maddalena Nano is an Assistant Project Scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she investigates cellular resilience in cancer cells, focusing on how cells survive potentially lethal stress. She holds a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University Pierre and Marie Curie and the Institut Curie in Paris, France. She also earned a double MSc in Genetics from the University Paris Diderot and in Functional Genomics from the University of Trieste, Italy, along with a BSc in Biotechnology from the University of Trieste.

With over a decade of research experience in various aspects of cellular health, Maddalena is passionate about studying the mechanisms that enable cells to overcome stress. Her experience extends beyond the lab—she has served as a reviewer, academic coordinator, guest editor, and mentor to undergraduate and junior researchers, helping guide and support their scientific growth.

Maddalena is also committed to empowering women in STEM. Since December 2024, she has volunteered with MASS AWIS, where she works to create an inclusive, connected scientific community that fosters professional development and collaboration for women across STEM fields.
