Biographies

Milka Kostic, PhD

Milka obtained her PhD in chemistry from Brandeis University and her postdoctoral research was conducted at The Scripps Research Institute; she joined Cell Press in 2007. As Senior Editor at Cell Press, Milka sets the vision, strategy and policies, and manages the editorial responsibilities of two Cell Press journals “Cell Chemical Biology” and “Structure”. As the Cell Crosstalk Editor, she contributes to the Cell Press outreach platform to support and advance science and scientists. The most fulfilling aspects of her work are learning about the newest science, engaging with the scientists behind it, and working with authors and reviewers to publish the most significant, reliable and reproducible reports with the hope of their impact beyond the disciplines of chemical and structural biology. One of Milka’s passions is promoting science, science education and careers, especially for girls and women and she has been privileged to serve as a mentor to girls, young and early career women through different organizations over the last decade, including MASS AWIS. Over the last few years Milka has also extensively written and presented on these topics.

Gail Teitzel, PhD

Gail is the Editor of Trends in Microbiology and a Senior Managing Trends Editor at Cell Press. She spends her days identifying current trends in microbiology, developmentally editing manuscripts, and determining and enacting a strategy for the journal. Gail earned her PhD at Northwestern University and did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago. She joined Cell Press as an editor in 2007 and became Editor of Trends in Microbiology in 2010.

Catherine Goodman, PhD

Catherine is the Scientific Editor at the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), where she spends her time thinking about how to advance scientific publishing in general and how to make life easier for JBC authors and readers specifically. This position follows a decade spent as an editor at Nature Chemical Biology. Catherine received her PhD from the University of Massachusetts followed by a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania.

Andrew Henderson, PhD

Andrew received his PhD from University of California, Riverside and did a postdoc at Columbia University. He first spent a decade at Pennsylvania State University before joining the faculty at the Boston University Medical School in 2007, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine and Microbiology. Research in his laboratory focuses on cellular mechanisms that regulate HIV replication, transcription and pro-viral latency. He has supervised the research of 7 postdocs, 13 PhD students, 10 Masters Students, 24 undergraduate students and sat on over 70 PhD thesis committees. He has reviewed for approximately two dozen journals and has served on grant review panels for American Medical Association, American Foundation for AIDS Research, and NIH. He is currently the Chair of the NIH AIDS Molecular and Cellular Biology Study Section.

Vickery Trinkaus-Randall, PhD

Vickery Trinkaus-Randall is a Professor of Biochemistry and Ophthalmology at Boston University School of Medicine. Vickery received her PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison and did a postdoctoral fellowship at Schepens Eye Institute/Harvard Medical School before taking a position at Boston University. While she loves working in the lab and has numerous confocal microscopes for imaging, Vickery has found that she enjoys mentoring students. During her time there she directed the umbrella Cell and Molecular Biology program and has been the advisor for the entering PhD students. In June of 2016, Vickery assumed the role of Co-Director of the MD/PhD program where she has placed a large emphasis on advising and grant writing. After many years of reviewing RO1s and the other Rs and Us she has been reviewing the F grants for the past several years. These are the grants for predoctoral and postdoctoral students. As a result she has given grant writing courses and informally advised other students in the “game and art” of writing proposals. One thing that she has found to be a true teaching moment is at the end of the course, the students review each others’ proposals in a mini mock review session. Her door is always open.

Feng Chen, PhD

Dr. Feng Chen received her BS and MS degrees from Peking University, a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chen spent almost a decade at Cell Press-Elsevier, as Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Cell and Executive Editor of the Molecular Biology Portfolio overseeing additional review titles, such as Trends in Biochemical Sciences and Trends in Genetics. She then joined Harvard University as Director of Research Affairs for the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. At the American Chemical Society, Dr. Chen is responsible for the strategic development and editorial management of a multidisciplinary portfolio of ACS Publications, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Reviews, Accounts of Chemical Research, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, and other distinguished titles in agricultural and food, energy and environmental science, and chemical education. She also plays a leading role in the development of strategic partnerships in China, Asia and beyond. Dr. Chen serves on the Journals Committee of Professional & Scholarly Publishing (PSP), Association of American Publishers, and is a member of the PSP 2017 Annual Conference Planning Committee. Dr. Chen was recently an invited speaker and panelist at the 2016 Council of Science Editors (CSE) Annual Meeting.
