Wednesday, November 16, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 8:45 am

To be eligible for this event, you must be a MASS AWIS student chapter member or a MASS AWIS member
registered with National AWIS
with paid Massachusetts chapter dues.

(Membership status will be checked after registration.)

MASS AWIS wants to offer its members the opportunity to make professional connections in their career path of interest. 3 MASS AWIS members will get the opportunity to meet with a STEM professional for 45 min at a coffee shop. The meeting will be a chance to learn more about the professional’s career and make a new connection. “Coffee With a Professional” is a FREE opportunity for MASS AWIS members. MASS AWIS will provide the professional with a gift card to cover the cost of a drink for all meeting participants.

10 members are allowed to register for each “coffee” session. After registration, they will get an email asking for their resume and a short paragraph explaining why they want to meet with the professional and how the meeting would impact their career (500 characters (not including spaces) max). Their resume and personal statement will be sent to the professional that will select the 3 members he or she wants to meet with. Members will get notified by email if they have been selected or not at least a week before the time of the meeting.

Research and Development Professional: Bianca Heinrich

Originally from Germany, Bianca got her Diploma (MS degree) in Biology in 1999 from the University of Hamburg. She was working on the neurological disease neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) at the time and collaborated with a lab in Boston. After she graduated, she got the opportunity to work for two years with Dr. Mia MacColling at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. During her time in Boston, she felt in love with the city and particularly enjoyed the working environment here in the United States. So she stayed and entered a PhD program at Boston University where she studied RNA localization mechanisms in early development under Dr. Jim Deshler. This was followed a postdoc at Harvard Medical School where she worked on negative-stranded RNA viruses with Dr. Sean Whelan for five years. She is now working happily in the biotech industry, currently at her third company (one startup went under and one got bought out). Her position at Abcam focuses on developing a robust assay for miRNA and protein detection from biofluids using the latest technologies and approaches.
